Internet of Everything

Did you know that 96% of businesses do not fully understand the GDPR?

The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is due to become effective on May 25, 2018. However, it is still not well understood as to how it relates to the Internet of Everything. Since it is believed companies' preparedness is behind schedule, there is work to be done.

The thing with data is we are always looking to measure more, improve more and sell more. Often it is forgotten that data can usually be defined as personal data, the kind that will fall right under the GDPR, which means, it will need to be compliant.

Let's use a forklift in a warehouse as an example, did you know this could be defined as personal data? How so? A data tracking forklift operated by an employee is in fact also revealing if the employee is working their shift as expected if the employee is driving carefully.

How do you see the GDPR affecting IoE?

    Hi Zoltan,

I share the concern of data security and privacy. With increasingly complex computing, machine learning and AI we are introducing some vulnerability to data protection.

While I am totally in for development and new technologies, I am concerned about the data hacks. Sensitive data in the wrong hand could bring chaos to the world.

A layman(a simple smartphone user) today is not aware, how much personal data is he allowing apps to use. Take a simple example of Google doing its predictive analysis on personal data from users. As a user, we have no idea what all data is it collecting and what could be the implications.

So I do agree to governments/regulators when they make data sharing more controlled and regulated. There has to be a balance between development and data safety. Recently supreme court of India made a verdict where it states, privacy is a fundamental right and Govt. can't make UID mandatory (unique identity scheme which records your iris scan and finger prints) to get social welfare benefits by govt.
