Does 5G deployment need both, NFV and SDN implementation or are all of them independent and complementary efforts addressed by a company?

Whilst 5G is mostly focused on network technology enhancements there is an angle on new service models - see the NGNM 5G White Paper.
Some of these service notions can be delivered using enhancements to current 4G solutions - so it depends which part of 5G you are thinking of to accurately answer your question.
It is also clear that new network function are going to be based on the concept of virtualization as described in NFV/SDN. However there is some evidence that the virtualisation infrastructure will be more diverse than simply Open Stack in a single data center. Discussion  in our DPRA teams and also ONAP are proposing a multi VIM based approach and this can be seen in the multiple initiatives around Edge and FOG computing.
So the end game for 5G is problably a Cloud Native set of networking applications supported by novel and diverse radio technologies around the  edge. The challenge is to map out the transformation path to this end state. which is a current activity in our ZOOM teams. So feel free to join  us
