With respect to SDN/NFV in telcom where is the most forward looking work being done with respect to dynamic rerouting and reconfiguration? I'm not talking about rerouting on failure, but changing network routing patterns and configurations to optimize network conditions as a normal operating procedure? I see the migration to SDN/NFV opening as many doors as the migration from electro-mechanical switching (like the much loved No. 1 Crossbar switch [with the orange stick and burnishing blade]) to electronic switching (which opened the door to remote maintenance, administration, and traffic).

    Richard,

Are you talking about creation of flexible optical network, for flexible ROADMs, the ability to create on demand connections for required usage or bandwidth calendaring type applications.

For me this is the role of the 'network orchestration'  platform, levering something like a network optimisation / planning toolbase (think Cariden / WAE) to be able to understand traffic patterns and growth and dynamically reshape the network accordingly, i guess vnf onboarding through MANO / VNFMs could feed input (in terms of expected traffic patterns) to such a tool to allow to to dynamically model the transport environment.
