What is the order to eventually migrate to a NFV/SDN Process in our network? I mean, what are the steps (if they exist) in order to take?

Some suppliers are talking about this order of three general steps:

    1.       Orchestration

    2.       NFV and

    3.       SDN

    Hi Oscar,

From our experience delivering SDN/NFV solutions globally; sequence below is followed :
    1. Setup Telco Cloud (NFVI)
    2. Layout SDN Underlay including SDN-C
    3. Onboard VNFs with VNFM : start with those that are most matured. e.g. vFW, vCPE, vLB etc
    4. Onboard NFVO
    5. Have Microservices implemented on top of NFVO to have this SDN/NFV management eco-system integrated with erstwhile OSS.

    Hope this helps.

    Our approach ==>
    1. Build SDN/NFV infrastructure together
    2. Implement few VNFs
    3. Implement orchestration layer
    4. Bring more VNFs and new services
    5. Continuous automation

    Thanks

That's probably the right order for those three areas however to get to step one you need to get ready organizationally. A lot of very entrenched thinking needs to be reevaluated. Concepts such as "five nines" can spark religious debates.  My pet peeve is with procurement which can really sabotage the intent of the transformation process. The TMF's Digital Maturity Model is a good resource.

Agree the organizational transformation aspects are important and often overlooked.
An overview to this subject of NFV /Virtualization transformation and the related TM Forum assets is just published in R17
IG1144 Transformation Towards the Operations Center of the Future R17.0.0  which also references DMMM

For procurement issues  and the consequential technical considerations which are really important we produced
IG1141 Procurement and Onboarding of Virtualization Packages R16.5.1
for which we have substantial ongoing technical work n the ZOOM Onboarding and Lifecycle Management team extending the technical content of: TR269 Onboarding Automation and Package Metadata R17.0.0
Early thinking on Procurement aspect of virtualization was captured in
IG1133 NFV Procurement Survival Kit Overview R15.0.1

For members interested in both the technical and procurement aspect of virtualization join ZOOM Project where we would welcome your input and insights.

    Hi

    Please follow below order always

    1.NFV
    2.SDN
    3.orchestration

Most of the telecom orchestration is not in a matured model currently.

    Hi Oscar,

I think no single approach applies to all CSP's like for CSP1 may be Platform will be first thing they look like the way colleagues explained.

For others migration from PNF to VNF is key due to may be capacity or CAPEX/OPEN reasons in that case even u can evaluate NFV with out NFVO .

So I think first need to decide the approach you are taking . but still I will suggest first start from Platform including both Cloud , VNFM ,NFVO in first phase and VNF/VNFM/Analytics /SDN in second phase . Reason is very logical to plan a NFV which is open and agile it must match with your platform not other way round . Secondly the VNF/VNFM/SDN/Analytics are mainly API consumer  and it looks more mature way to freeze platform and its related API's before going to application part .

    Makes sense ?
