The rapid rate of digitization has caught many off guard. Operators are not alone as they face challenges in digitizing their technology stacks. It's a process that is made daunting by the need to either replace or upgrade the BSS/OSS systems, which will be either too expensive or time-consuming in many instances.

One of the ways to address this problem is a concept called an unconscious BSS. Basically, the idea is to leave the BSS alone and implement digitalization above the BSS. This allows digitalization to hit the consumer quicker, without incurring a major expense.

Is this best approach considering the current rate of technological progression? Should operators be more aggressive in digitizing the entirety of their technology stacks?

The implementation of the conscious part is an opportunity to leverage Frameworx standards, especially SID. This aware layer should integrate with both ends (customer experience and core systems) while delivering and consuming information in a std. fashion across all B/OSS sub-domains.

The choices of integration methodologies should drive the basic goals of digitization and transformation, reduction in time to market, reduction of dependencies that systems of engagement have on core systems, open interfaces to experience layer and third party stakeholders.

Although, there is no one-size-fits-all blueprint to achieve this, operators, vendors and system integrators should carefully draft and implement a road map that best suits the operators' goals, their current IT landscape and set a definite time frame to achieve this.

Of course, implementation should be as iterative as possible with a fail-fast and business metrics driven approach.
