    Hi TMForum community,
I'm new of this community so, sorry in advance if some questions will sounds silly. According to the TMForum's OpenAPI specification, what TMF would you use to exchange data about carbon emissions?

    Thanks in advance,
    J.

    Hi Jacopo
It's difficult to relate to your question without some business context.
Perhaps you could share the business situation, with examples of the parties involved, the business flow, etc., if you can manage to do this without leaking IP.
In general, business flow analysis (with sequence diagrams and similar) is a great way to discover API operations.
    Hope it helps.

    Hi Jonathan,
    thanks for you feedback.

There's not yet a real business situation, I'm currently just working on a proposal with quite not a lot information available. Basically the request is to define a set of APIs for exchange data about the CO2 emissions. These data are collected by external systems and pushed on internal system.

I was approaching the problem by checking the TMForum API set to understand if one of the TMFs could be suitable for my need...probably not the best approach I agree.

    Cheers,
    J.

    Thanks Jacopo for the clarification

I honestly cannot think of any appropriate API for this in our Open API set, certainly not without more business context. The Open APIs are generally concerned with running a Telco business. CO2 emission reporting, while no doubt of importance, is not necessarily in the front-line of telco functionality.

    Sorry

Many thanks for your quick feedback Jonathan,
I was pretty sure that currently there's not an appropriate API for this but I was worth to ask...and start approaching the community :)

About the specific topic I agree that currently it's not strictly related with the Telco market; but I think also that, especially with the growth of tower co. market in telco, this topic could became "hot" quite fast. Your opinion about it?

For example, the proposal I mentioned before is for a Telco company that asks for APIs compliant with TMForum standard to collect these kind of data.

Many thanks again for your feedback!

    Cheers,
    J.

    Hi Jacopo,

Many years ago I worked in a company trying to link inventory data for telco equipment with energy consumption. As CO2 emissions are strongly correlated with energy consumption, inventory data (provided by the inventory API) could be a first indication. I believe there are inventory systems (especially in the DC space) that provide energy readings. But you have to correlate this data with other data about the energy mix consumed by the CSP to derive CO2 emissions. And you do not cover the CO2 footprint of the production of the equipment itself. I guess only the manufacturer has this data.

    Hope this helps,

    Roland

My view, for what it's worth, is that you are merely collecting data from a set of sensors (perhaps) and moving it from one place to another place for consumption.  We have APIs related to Data Collection and Event Measurement; we have the SID that defines data models for resources and resource parameters that need to be collected.

So, isn't this really more of an exercise on how to map "carbon emissions" onto an appropriate telco equivalent, much like we would map a Citizen of a City to a Consumer of a Mobile service?

    Hi Roland, Dave,
    thanks both for your answers.

I got some more clarification about this topic and basically what we're going to collect are statistics about the IT infrastructure such as: Kw/H consuming,  server utilization and so on. Starting from these data I can assume that CO2 data will be calculated.

So the matter is understanding which API fit better for dealing with these kind of data.

    Thanks again for your feedbacks.

Well, we have one in development called IoT Device Management API Component Suite TMF 609, I'm not sure of the timescales on that one and I'm sure they'd welcome extra resource effort to complete it.

If you join the Open APIs collaboration project:, https://myaccount.tmforum.org/joinproject, I'm sure you could ask the question in there as well.

    Hi Jacopo,

Is this some kind of ESG initiative whereby a company shall expose CO2 emission related data via a public API, which then could be consumed by external stakeholders (government, NGOs, investment funds, ...)?

    Best regards,
