    I'm looking to put together some information regarding industry best practices for using Open APIs. A few top of mind questions are, what are the advantages and disadvantages of Open APIs; are there any legal implications for Open APIs; and what are standard security mechanisms? I'd like to be able to have best practices available when explaining the value of Open APIs to customers.

    Mate, I think best practices are still being generated as companies are crawling into Open APIs market. I will share my mind in the try to stimulate the discussion here, I hope to contribute.

    what are the advantages and disadvantages of Open APIs
    As advantages the biggest one is as I stated in a paper I shared internally for my team:
    "    As more companies take advantage of software-as-a-service (SaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), there is a growing need to integrate cloud services with existing backend systems or even other cloud services. Whether you are migrating to the cloud completely or choosing a hybrid model, you will need APIs to make those connections.
    Furthermore, by using APIs, you can integrate with other companies that provide services, which are outside your core competencies, allowing you to concentrate on what you do best. Similarly, you can focus your resources on creating the best product or service and then provide that to other companies through your own APIs"

    are there any legal implications for Open APIs; and what are standard security mechanisms
    Legal implications will depend on each country laws. I can discuss about Brazil and here, depending on the terms and conditions of the Open API offering it can generate some labor law problems.

    I'd like to be able to have best practices available when explaining the value of Open APIs to customers
