What 'thing' would you connect?

Discussions within the IoT community seem to have died. Either everyone is hunkered down and working on making it reality or interest in IoT has simply faded.

To spark some lively conversation, let's play a game.

Assuming that to connect a 'thing' to the internet is as simple as applying an small sticker, without concern about power, connectivity, or interface.

    1. What 'thing' would you connect to the internet?
    2. What interface would it provide?
    3. What would be the benefit?

Share your silly or outrageous ideas for connecting some 'thing' to the internet.

I'll start with a few, to give you an idea.

    1. Toothbrush
    2. Motion sensors
    3. Provide feedback on technique and amount of time

    1. Mop bucket
    2. Moisture sensor
    3. Track mopping frequency

    1. Analog clock
    2. Camera towards clock face
    3. Send notification when time is incorrect

What 'thing' would you connect to the internet?

    Fun thread, thanks Brian!

I'd quite like to have a small device I could plant into my orchid pots and that would tell me exactly what they need and when, as mine keep dying to my great dismay! I guess it would need to measure moisture, nutrients and sunlight and notify me advising me specifically of what to do.

And how about smart patches that not only help smokers to quit but inform them of their progress and vital improvements like "your lungs are now pink instead of black" and personalised motivational messages.

Those are just a couple of silly ideas, but I'd like to follow on from your question as ask people how they think IoT could be used to really impact the planet and/or societies and lives. For example, how could IoT help reduce our use of plastic or help clean up our oceans?

This is a tough question, but I'm sure there are solutions out there that could go mainstream, or ideas that can be implemented.

Looking forward to seeing what comes up!

    Thandi

    Great question!
I would connect my bird feeders in the garden to tell me when they need a refill. It would be lovely if it could take some nice close-up photos of the birds too. So I guess it would just need a sensor and a camera to achieve that. Then it would benefit me and the birds at the same time!

I am more into how this can boost the famers lives, would like to connect the farm lands like moisture and leaf fall to monitor water needs and insect/predator attack on the crops and for the poultry farms to monitor temperature, poultry feeds and eggs. It can save several man hours of the farmers who have to inspect all land through repeated human effort and this can be a useful automation to go in the fields less frequently and use the time for something else productively

I liked the idea of connecting bird feeder as well.

Exactly we discussed in our team to develop a POC to monitor the moisture and water level of the field.  As our area is agriculture area and this will help farmers a lot and no need to go in the night to check the water etc..

What thing would I connect to the internet:    Septic Tank
What interface would it provide:     Level sensor that can differentiate between scum (fats/oils), water, and sludge (solids)
What would be the benefit:     Alert owner to need to pump the tank before failure of the system

    Pardeep,

Yes, this is a great one! There are many IoT applications in agriculture, which are very promising both in terms of facilitating work for farmers and labourers, in improving production, yields, and food security and sovereignty, in boosting income and livelihoods and in protecting the land and the planet as a whole. I think we'll see a lot more implementation in the coming years from the basic and inexpensive to the massive-scale, high-investment solutions.

What do you think barriers to this development might be and what would be needed to overcome them?

My inputs are regarding monitoring air quality index and raising real time alerts to traffic controllers to plan and divert traffic accordingly. This will help ease the situation at polluted places. The alerts can also help commuters to choose their routes.

A device to place in the water well house that monitors ambient temperature, pump cycling, and water pressure.

And following on that, how about additional features to detect any contamination and alerting relevant parties (village chief, local NGOs...), especially in rural Africa.

    Hi ,

    1. Connect apparel / or some part of clothes.
    2. Some kind of wash / water resistant bluetooth based interface , no idea how .
    3. Multiple use from partially changing color  of  the apparel,  based on events / notifications on the mobile , to configuring / changing logos on clothes based on settings. It would be extension of expression from digital world to wearables hence a connection.

    Regards,

    This sounds fun, Rohan!

I guess it could also be used for advertising and wearers could get incentives from brands, which would also be a sustainable advertising support. I'm sure there are waterproof solutions that could be used. I wonder if something similar could be used for safety purposes for example for road workers or construction workers.

    Hi Everybody from (Io)Everything!
Something to monitor meet temperature from producer to consumer. Many times we don´t know the temperature history over all the way down to our kitchen and find out the badly way, arghhhh.

About the lack of interest in IoT, well, I prefer to believe in the first assumption.

    BRgds.

    Hi Luiz,

Absolutely, IoT can play a huge role in food safety. I was thinking whether the might be a way of really certifying and monitoring that, for example, organic produce really is organic and to the standards that consumers would expect. The only way I can think of (other than just trusting the labels) is to allow consumers to access - read only of course - farms' data, perhaps through a link from the retailer's website, on their produce measuring all substances, also including information about pollution and soil conditions. What do you think?

How else can IoT generate trust and confidence?

    Hi Thandi

How about a unique block chain transaction issued by the farmer & applied to the product?  This way you can trace & trust the source, & ensure that no fake data is introduced.  There are even DNA testers which attach to your mobile (see Biomeme) so you could combine the DNA code with the transaction for uniqueness.

    Kind regards

Yes , for security and to create a trusted network, IoT and Blockchain will work hand in had. One such Blockchain framework is Sawtooth which is being developed for IoT based applications or echosystem under Hyperledger . Through synergy between these two technologies, we can render near to 100% authenticity to any product from it's inception till the delivery at the consumers doorstep.

Is Hyperledger Sawtooth more suitable for IoT than Hyperledger Fabric?

    Graeme, Mohammed, Volker,

Thanks! Brilliant projects and solutions here, thank you for sharing. I'll be sure to look further into these. It's exciting to think of all the advances that will be unlocked by the technology we now have at our fingertips!

What role, or how important do you think blockchain or distributed ledger technology will be in IoT development? I guess I should start a new thread for this question actually so I will do so...

Keep the IoT ideas coming though! Thanks,

    Thandi

Let's get another round started.  Round II

Here's a summary of the things the community suggested to connect to the internet, so far.

    • Agriculture - Monitor crop conditions, livestock conditions, and alert when there are insects/predators
    • Air quality - Allow commuters and traffic management systems to reroute around low quality areas
    • Analog clock - Monitor time accuracy
    • Bird feeder - Measure bird feed and take close-up photos
    • Food safety and verify organic agricultural products
    • Meats - Track temperature from producer to consumer
    • Mop bucket - Mopping frequency
    • Planter - Advising on soil and environmental needs for plant type
    • Septic Tank - Monitor levels, bacteria, and ecosystem health
    • Smart Apparel - Digital clothing, change color and/or logo, location aware advertising
    • Toothbrush - Feedback on technique and amount of time used
    • Transdermal Patch - Monitor progress of; and support smoking cessation
    • Water Well - Monitor for contamination, track use, and environmental conditions
Let's not get caught up in how!  Don't worry about form factor, power, connectivity, or where the data is stored.

What do you think should be connected to the internet and the reasons why?
