    Hi,
I'm looking for operators business capability which can be an outcome of business architecture topic driven by Digital Ecosystem, however could not find anything concrete. GB1007 and GB1007A is also not available as a resource. ODA also states about Business Capability repository. Where can I find such capability map and are there different versions depending on business model?

    Hi Avishek

Perhaps what you are looking for is the list of functional capabilities. This is one part of TAM (Application Framework), you'll find the list in the published V20.5 TAM excel here. Look on the Functions tab. @Kaj Jonasson or @Avi Talmor might be able to assist further.

ODA has adopted this list as a basis for functional scope of components. @Gaetano Biancardi might be able to guide you with more details here.

    Hope itself.

    Hi Jonathan,
Thanks. The link of the spreadsheet you sent doesn't have a file there, perhaps the sheet moved to different location?
Well then to start with I meant business capability from GB1007 (Provided a picture below of the sheet, I got from a colleague) but then I noticed it's not available anymore. When I looked in detail I noticed these functional capabilities that's available from TAM too. So I'm wondering if GB1007 is obsolete and I should only focus on TAM functional capability and eTOM L1 processes as an connection to CSP's capability? The image below is from the spreadsheet named - GB1007A_Business_Architecture_Capabilities_v4.0. Also None of the links for business capability works. @Jonathan Goldberg

    Hi Avishek
I checked the link again. https://projects.tmforum.org/wiki/download/attachments/154175877/GB929F_Application_Framework_Functional_Decomposition_v20.5.xlsx?api=v2
When I click on it, I get an excel. Is it possible that you are not logged in as a TMF user? I can't think of any other reason why this fails, the file is an attachment on the public area of TMF.
You could try this link as well: https://www.tmforum.org/resources/suite-standard/gb929-application-framework-tam-suite/#

Worst case, let me know your email address and I'll send it to you privately.
    Good luck

    Hi Jonathan,
Thanks. Now I can access. By the way do you know what happened to GB1007 and GB1007A on business architecture, are these 2 obsolete artefacts? Are there some other artefacts replaced them?

    Hi Avishek,
I do not think you will find much on Business Capabilities in the TM Forum documentations. Business Capabilities are more linked to Business Modeling.
And business capabilities are absolutely not functional capabilities!!!!!!!

    Business capabilities are more like:
    • Recurring revenue; The ratio between Transactional revenue and recurring revenue
    • Earning vs. spending; Incur 100% of your cost before earning revenue vs collect all revenue before cost incur
    • Switching cost; nothing holds customers back from leaving vs. my customers are locked in for several years
    • Ability to move from selling to servicing
    • How to get an audience vs customers only (e.g. Apple)
There are others, but just to give you something.

But, to be clear, business capabilities are not an outcome of business architecture nor digital ecosystem. Business capabilities needs to be defined in business modelling work.

Also, Business architecture is the interactions with all elements, tangible and intangible withing your organisation. Ecosystem is all internal interactions plus external interactions such as customers, partners, suppliers, regulatorys etc.

There is quite a bit of work around defining a Business Capability but common thought is that they represent the "What" a Business does (nothing to do with the how) and are defined using a noun verb combination i.e. Order Management or Customer Management and so on

    Hi Cato,
Thanks. Yes I agree that biz. and func. are definitely not same. However the right func. capability can be/should chosen to support the business capability because model will remain agnostic which function is chosen it will be only interested if the biz capability is there to support the model. I think @Tony Shepherd you made very simple yet important about the 'what' and 'how' analogy.
Now when one sits in the IT/NW side of a CSP, the person would like see what capabilities are in offering that would support the business model and the same question would come from the Product area heads or sales manager's from CSP. Then hypothetically it would be right to consider/identify the functional capabilities available or needed to support/enhance the business capability. E.g Order "Management capability" can support "recurring revenue" for "B2B datacom sell & managed service".

Yup 100% - that's why you need to be careful if you are talking about Business Capabilities OR IT Capabilities

Ok thanks @Tony Shepherd, so then can I conclude with the assumption that, since business capabilities vary largely between CSPs and is coupled with the business model, making that generic may not be feasible, however we can consider the capabilities from the functions (TAM) and use those to be composed or decomposed in various ways(with conformance of course) to support whatever business model CSPs come up with. I think way IT/NW side of CSP and supplier side of CSP both can have common capability (functional) model to work on.

Hi - no not really for me - everyone does Order Management or Customer Management etc - it is the How that I would expect to vary (at a high level).  Happy to have a chat offline if it helps

    Hi there,

I also recently got interested in the GB1007 work. Thanks for clarifying that TMF does not longer use it. @Tony Shepherd: You mention some other ongoing work. Can you be more specific or point us to a TMF resource?

    Thanks for that input.
However, in my book Business capabilities are definitely not about what a business does. It is about WHY a business want/need/have to do. What you need to do to achieve the why is how. HOW: Business Process (eTom is about Verbs), WHAT: Informations (SID, is about nouns). I cannot think of anything that is further from the data model than Business capabilities.

e.g. For business strategic reasons and to serve customers better and be more flexible as well as satisfy regulatory requirements a CSP needs/wants/has to implement priced items. Priced item can be a service and it can be a product. In some regions products and services are taxed differently. In a bundle consisting of products and services (Service: minutes, GB, Subscriptions. Product: Devices, Apps)  the bundle needs to be decomposed, and audit, tracking, and reconciliation to be done on each service and product component individually.

    Hi @Avi Talmor
I moved ahead with the Business Capability list from GB1007, however while recently digging some stuff, I found the capability list and a deck on capability map that you have produced. It is accessible under input material 19.5 in Frameworx project. So I'm wondering is there still some work going on with it (mapping to TAM and eTOM), or this is not used now. Link here.

    Hi Avishek

As noted above in this thread the Business Capabilities list published as GB1007 has been withdrawn and is not used by TMF. (with work on a replacement list in progress)
Therefore, while I am not sure what artifact you refer in your question, no mapping is currently valid.

    Hi @Avi Talmor,
Thanks. I'd like to join the project where the replacement work is in progress so to understand and contribute perhaps. Can you please tell me which project is it?
