    Hi All,

I'm trying to track down data (or even anecdotal evidence) to support a hypothesis. With the combined experience here on Engage, I figured it might be a useful place to start.

I'd like to identify whether there has been much change in the number of product offerings at big telcos over the years.

For example, I'm making a big assumption that the number of offers has increased steadily from 1980 to today. I'm assuming there were POTS, ISDN (PRI, BRI) and other offers back in the day, but not the dozens/hundreds of hero+grandfathered offerings that our systems currently have to cater for. Am I underestimating all the weird and wonderful offerings for traffic lights, alarms, etc and the huge number of variants that were supported by the voice switches like EWSD, E10s, AXEs, ESS, etc??

I'd love to get your insights on this!!

Yes there is a lot of Products, with a view and motion to Simplify and Reduce the number.
A lot of products for specific markets plus technical options/implementation variations in each product.
This drove system/OSS complexity and cost of ownership upwards over the years.
Voice particularly is increasingly going over IP (esp. with nbn) which opens up security Pandora box (ID spoofing, remote access).
This is not to say there is no copper voice anymore, but the end is near with nbn rollout closing in.

    Hi Ryan,

The subject you touched on has, and is still evolving at unprecedented speed. But of course more so in the mobile than the fixed telephony sector.

And having said that, there are online resources too numerous to mention here for your reference and perhaps assist you in supporting your hypothesis.

Following are a few links that may help you with more in-depth data and further links to other resources.
