    Hi Ajay,

1- 4D location: We will know the exact location together with elevation.
2- Low Latency: Smartphone based games may finally take over PC games in time. Real time applications will be using 5G as well.
3- Home Wireless Broadband: In place like old cities where CSPs cannot lay fiber easily, 5G based wireless home broadband will be an incumbent PSTN killer.
4- Data Science and Machine Learning: 5G will generate a lot of data. Processing data for business analytics will be the real money maker in order to steer customer choices.

    Kind regards

    Hi Andres,

I have come accross with companies sniffing WiFi messages in order to locate potential customers in shopping malls in ailes as well as the location of potential customer in the shop itself. For the by-passer, they try to promote their shop and products, and for the ones inside the shop, they summon salesperson more knowledgeable for the products where the customer stands. Both ways, the aim is sale and customer satisfaction.

Regarding your question, I have not come across with a specific company working on the issue.
5G is not live in Turkey as of moment.
@ James... Robotic surgery is possible but not probable. It is just a marketing leverage. I recommend reading the legal developments on the AI side. If you see them, you may easily observe the immense consequences of robotic surgery dream and its liabilities.

    As per forbes (1) IoT - (2) AI - (3) Cloud - (4) Big Data - (5) RPA are going to utilize 5G.

In my opinion IOT would the biggest use case, followed by VR/AR and blockchain.

I think the first set of Use Cases will come from operators who are extending their existing 4G networks towards 5G . For them the quick wins will be in eMBB space. The main use cases for eMBB are -
    • Broadband access in dense areas
    • Broadband access everywhere
    • Mobile Broadband in high speed vehicles.
    • AR /VR
    • FWA

    Hi Ajay,

5G Monetization use cases will directly be following the eminent offerings of newer 'G' in town-
    1. eMBB (enhanced Mobile Broad Band):
    • AR/VR Media & Applications
    •  UltraHD Streaming videos
    •  Gbps Bandwidth, FWA
    2. mMTC (massive Machine Type Communication):
    • LPWA technology support
    •  Massive IoT/ Industrial IoT ( 4IR/Industry 4.0)
    3. URLLC (Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication):
    • Smart City/ Smart Home/ Smart Building
    •  Smart Grid/ Energy
    • Self Driving Cars ( V2V, V2I, V2X Communication)
    • Mission Critical Applications ( Healthcare, Remote Diagnosis, Surgery)
Chronologically speaking,  eMBB is being implemented as NSA as of now & mMTC deliverables can be feasibly expected in 2-3 years as there standards are in place or in finalization stages. URLLC which according to my understanding would be the path to future 'G' & newer revenue generation, will take its due time for full boom as its standardization is still in initial stages & requires a lot of understanding.
CSPs are going to become more than just connectivity enablers. Network Slicing (5G SA/NSA) in true sense can help achieve a lot as per phases of deployment start.
OSS/BSS definition should span from CSPs to Healthcare to EVs to verticals that would require excessive domain specialized monitoring.

    Dear Cato,

eMBB is an acronym for enhanced Mobile Broad Band & is the one of  the direct use case under 5G System (5GS) along with mMTC (massive Machine Type Communication) & URLLC (Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication). Its standards have been in place after 3GPP's specification were defined in December'17. The specification talked about introduction of 5GNR (5G New Radio) as a stepping stone to provide future ready speed & bandwidth using the already setup 4G architecture & was termed as Non-Stand Alone (NSA) 5G architecture.

Given that you specifically ask about the opportunities for Telcos, I think that these are likely to be limited.  When deriving new products and services for businesses and consumers, 5G confers few advantages the 5G provider over the other companies and market entrants.  To put it another way, once 4G became widely available, did Uber need AT&T?

Yes, they actually did and still do. Where is Uber if the internet stops working? 😁
To get a digital ecosystem working Telco services are fundamental. Any opportunity expanding on that? I would think so.
But it will not find it by spinning old ideas and brushing dust off old approaches and business cases.
Telco's need new ideas. I am afraid those new ideas will not come from middle-aged men in grey suits, neither from staff who have annual measurements and job reviews.
Nor do I think it will be helpful offering opinions left, right and centre. Establish a format where new ideas can be captured, prioritised. Ideas should be hypothesised and tested for desirability before embarking on feasibility.

In the UK we have a 5G Testbeds and Trials programme funded by the government which is tasked with discovering the business case(s) for 5G.  You can find a lot of information on the programme at www.uk5G.org.

We have funded trials across a wide range of sectors and use cases, and even ahead of the full availability of the range of 5G capable equipment (that should start to emerge this year), our trial projects have seen significant - and often unexpected - value from 5G applications/use cases.  Low-cost mmWave mesh networks to support healthcare in economically deprived city areas, cost-effective rural connectivity, counting sheep using drones, managing salmon farms off Orkney have all figured.  The more expected (but no less challenging high-speed automotive, Industry 4.0 and AR/VR tourism use cases have also been demonstrated successfully.

Alongside these demand-side trials we've also seen very significant work done to drive down deployment costs through reducing barriers in legislation and especially local authority practices to encourage mobile and fixed network operators to invest.  Historically the 500+ Local Authorities (LAs) in the UK have operated independently, meaning that each of our 4 mobile operators had to deal with 500 different processes to roll out and maintain networks.  Now we see LAs starting to harmonize and automate their processes for issuing permits and negotiating site access/rentals - this can have a dramatic impact on costs and timescales.

5G is about much more than the radio interface of the mobile network.  It signals the move to convergence of mobile and fixed networks, with common core functions which are increasingly virtualised and software defined in all parts of the network.  This again should have a radical impact on the cost of ownership, and create opportunities for new business models and increased infrastructure sharing.  Trials show that private and hybrid networks (fixed and wireless) are likely to become popular - giving rise to the need for a new generation of software products able to manage such hybrid networks for telcos and enterprises.  The US has already seen the rise of the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) in rural areas, and we can expect to see these elsewhere.  Just because a national operator doesn't see a business case for rolling out networks doesn't mean there isn't local demand, but there may well be a need for different approaches to deployment and operation.  Liberalised spectrum approaches and lower cost software defined networks can be the key to making these work.

Do take a look at www.uk5G.org - it's free to join for anyone across the world.

Tony this is all great, but still all based on feasibility.

Much has been written and even more said about the opportunities that 5G will bring. Everything written about 5G was written and said about 4G, and 3G before that. It all centres around connectivity and speed. So-called "Business Cases" are based on the same feasibility approach as before. Market and customer
desirability is based on fiction and financial viability on a vanity revenue scenario. And 5G is supposed to be revolutionary?   Meanwhile,  young spirited entrepreneurs with technological brilliance are hidden away in garages, basements and/or coffeeshops somewhere coming up with ideas us old men in grey suits haven't even thought about. Don't get me wrong I am all for 5G and the possibilities, but they need to be based on innovative business models as opposed to the endless number of use-cases groined out by engineers. I would seriously question whether these are true business cases, but rather a wish (74% of all new products and services fail).

Yes. Not every use case may have direct business and social value generated. Implementation of 5G use cases is investment heavy but without certainty of financial or social returns but it will change the way we live today. Financial returns will be the last thing to expect from such use cases.

Thank you all community members for your valuable views on this topic and interesting use cases. I believe by year 2020-21 , 5G will gain momentum and we would have better picture in terms of prioriority monetization use cases for Telcos. So far commercial 5G launches ( which are mostly non standalone networks ) focused on high speed only.
