Along with my colleagues at the recent TMF Open API Specjam in London last week, I was upset to hear of the passing of John Reilly, one of the stalwarts of the SID in particular and the TM Forum in general.
I am sure that there are many people out there who worked with John intensively and can gave an appreciation of his qualities. From my limited encounters with John, I can say that I was impressed by his quest for truth and integrity. He pushed forward his views and agenda, even when perhaps they were not always popular.
The richness of the SID surely testifies to John's dedication, and hopefully this will be his abiding legacy.
    RIP John

Oh dear - that is a shock. I fondly remember John Sitting down with me for my first SID training at Nice some years ago as the only student enrolled in the SID class for that day (and passing the exam afterwards). Since that time, I've caught up with him at Nice and Dublin over the years.  It is indeed a sad day for us to loose John too early. I'm sorry to see him go. RIP John.

So sorry to hear this. Have received support over email for some clarifications on SID. He was always prompt with his response and even apologize for late reply, while offering support. May his soul RIP.

John was a very nice person, and a human beeing in the constant look for additonal understanding of how  everything worked, and how we perceive how all that works around us.

His work in SID is one of his legacies and one that helped me so much.

Hope you are in a better place now John.

Hello all, I wanted to let you know that I've written a remembrance of John for our Inform site -- I was fortunate to have edited John's last book Frameworx: Mastering the Digital World and during that time, I spoke to him nearly every day for 2 months. He was a wonderful person and we will all miss him. You can read my piece here. We've invited those who remember him to comment on this community page so that we may share those comments with his family in due course.

It seems particularly fitting that there are tributes to John on our Community. As one of the most active contributors over the years I'm sure many folks here will have read or been helped by his supportive and detailed responses to questions. This is testimony to John's passion for teaching and sharing knowledge with others.
For me John will be best remembered for his playful sense of humour that made him so much fun to work with. A true gent who will be greatly missed.

As John would say "Seeya". RIP Big John.

Very sad news to hear about the passing of John.
Whilst I only met him on a number of occasions in the mid 2000's during NGOSS/SID training sessions with Nokia, those memories are embedded as being key events and stepping stones in the evolution of my own career in Telecoms; not only because of Johns willingness to impart his knowledge, but also his ability to guide the answers to difficult questions, which showed his real leadership, delivered with openness, integrity and honesty.
John has left both a fantstaic legacy but also a lasting impression on many of us.
May he be fondly remembered and now rest peacefully

As many of you, I knew John from his books. His books are very logical, inspiring and comprehensive. John was a fantastic storyteller and very good at describing the complicated things in a simple way. Frameworx has huge influence globally with a big contribution from John.

Later, I became the colleague of John and had more chances to communicate, of course, learn from him. He was a passionate, knowledgeable, and professional subject matter expert. I am very honored to be able to translate one of John's eight books into Chinese in 2016. The book gained big success and helped many local readers established better understanding on Frameworx.

Thank you John and your legacy will accompany us forever.

It's been a while since I've been active in the TMForum, but I vividly remember the TMW in Vegas that gave rise to the SID team.  I remember the animated discussions, the quiet meals, the long conversations about life, and the times John and I got together in Dallas just because we felt like ... usually half way between my home in Fort Worth and John's home in Plano.

John was a good man, a good soul, and a good friend.  We are all lessened by his passing, and should be inspired by the example he set for all of us.  Godspeed John.

Thanks John for everything and maybe we will meet again in afterlife, no more talking of new SID classes :)

John was a master, a gentleman and a very knowledgeble expert. The SID loses one of its inspirers and way-forwarder, and we all lose a mentor. May all witnesses appearing from all latitudes ease the pain for family, colleagues and friends. RIP John.

It is just over 18 months since I last had the pleasure of working with John to create and maintain all the Frameworx training. His passion for the material and attention to detail were key, but the thing that really stood out for me was his relentless focus on creating a good experience for the students. If anybody who has taken any of the Frameworx fundamentals courses though they were easy to understand, that is John's work you are experiencing.

Very few things of value are created by one person. Most things need collaboration between a large number of people, and that means you have to argue different points of view. In the time I had the pleasure of looking after Frameworx for the Forum I saw plenty of robust debate over passionately held views. The remarkable thing about John in those debates was that he never cared WHO was right he only cared WHAT was right. If a few more people could follow his example the world would be a much better place.

John, you were a gentleman and scholar, thank you for all you taught me. There will be plenty of tricky times in the future when I think to myself "How would John have handled this" and I will be guided to a better solution.

John worked with me in huawei SPO LAB back to 2015 and 2016. In these two years John did great job by creating the concept/idea to market business process and contributed to business process framework(eTOM) and information framework(SID) enhancements. This was fantastic and guidedthe new digital services innovation for Telcos' digital transformation. on the other hand, John also came to Shenzhen and trained the GTS team how the business process could be used for the new services innovation, and the training was well accepted. John's work for sure brought great value to us, and his humorous speaking made a deep impression to us! Best Wished!

John was such an amazing man it's hard to know where to start or which things to talk about.  He is certainly the most generous person I've ever met.  Generous with his time, his knowledge, hist perspective, wit, humor and friendship. Even after leaving TM Forum and his retirement, I knew I could call John with an obscure technical question (probably about the SID) and he'd always answer.  My brother won't even do that!

One of my lasting memories is sitting at any of a dozen hotel bars with him, having a late dinner and just chatting. Frequently it was trading ideas about cooking something but many times, it was about nothing in particular.  But "nothing" with John was something.  Something special.

Another time while huddling with Rebecca Sendel and David Andrews about how to "re-invent" Forumville (or whatever it's called today), we hit upon the idea of stealing the Genius Bar concept from Apple Stores.  We'd create a spot with a white board where people with questions could stop by, discuss them and hopefully find an answer.   We knew that in reality, this was the "John Reilly full employment act" because there was never any doubt who our genius was going to be.  We were a bit concerned that we would be monopolizing his time, so we created a schedule (or rota) so he'd have some time off.

Maybe the others on the schedule took a turn but it was "John's Place" from day 1, hour 1. Unless he had another place to be, John held court and it was never a chore.  He'd answer the same question 10 times a day if it helped people understand and solved their problem.

There are hundreds more stories and anecdotes and I know as soon as I send this, a great one will come to mind.  But that's OK – others will add theirs and the full picture of a great guy with a full life will be memorialized.

I don't like thinking of a world without John but wherever he is – the folks there are lucky SOBs to have him around.
