Hi Daniel,
The traditional role of Communications companies continues to evolve beyond the pipe. This, amongst many contributors, is caused by the shift back to customer needs. IoT has been a difficult sell, especially in the African markets where it would make the most positive impact. Communications companies (Telcos) therefore have to make the shift to targeted solutions. These are mostly vertical solutions such transport, agricultural. tourism, safety(public safety) and retail orientated.
The new paradigm for Telcos is Digital platforms. IoT provides for the underlying technology for the Digital Platforms - whether it be in the home, enterprise or public spaces.
We have seen that with <g class="gr_ gr_175 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="175" data-gr-id="175">LoRa</g> and SqwidNet proliferation in urban spaces, traffic management solutions are now embedded into apps such as google maps and Waze and that is making an impact. Unfortunately, local Telcos and Mobile Networks have been slow to adopt or integrate into their existing network infrastructure.
Also operating business models are at early stages which makes most Telcos nervous if they cannot visualise how they will monetise the introduction of Digital Platforms coupled with IoT - these are becoming complex for traditional Telcos.
To then answer your question with the above in mind, Telcos are still playing in the "pipe" space which is not sustainable. Business agility is required in order for them to transform into the Digital value stream.

Do you see the Communications industry as only providing a "Pipe"for IoT comms or do you see the Communications industry implementing business solutions for IoT requirements?
