What is the progress of implementation of NFV/SDN currently world wide? Is it currently come to practicality?

My opinion is that every operator is first moving to a concept of "virtualization" (i.e. running network functions as software, into virtual machines) but the adoption of the "full NFV concepts" (orchestration, multi-vendor, elasticity...) looks a little bit far away mainly due to lack of standards and technical challenges.

On the side of WANs, SD/NFV has matured significantly and a few trailblazers are emerging in the market with SD/NFV implementation based on Cisco technology (Tail-F) and Open stack to configure and provision Internet / Ethernet connectivity. The market is starting to see solutions being rolled out by alliances of operators who share their connectivity infrastructures and make it available as a commodity globally.

On the mobile Access and Core network functions, Huawei and others have rolled out limited trial versions of NFV spanning MME/SGSN/GGSN delivered in a box solution in the cloud. The monetization model for pay as you grow have yet to be defined with the scalability and elasticity requirements of cloud based solutions which CSP are still slow to adopt. Moving away from existing installed PNFs is a slow process.
