How can we monitor the operational and performance statistics within each NFV/SDN element?

    Hi Brian,

In NFV, you can use monitoring systems such as Monasca (Monitoring-as-a-Service solution) by installing on each VNFC a Monasca agent.
For SDN elements for example OpenFlow switches you should do the same, i.e. installing monitoring agents on all the switches and the also the SDN controller.

    Brian -

One of the key things to think about when monitoring NFV is the need to monitor each of the layers of the architecture and their relationships to one another.    Most NFV implementations we are seeing today utilize OpenStack for the virtualized infrastructure - you'll want to start first by assuring OpenStack, the services it relies upon and the physical hardware that it runs on.   Next you'll need to monitor the VNF , VNF Managers and Orchestration systems -- it is key that your assurance system is tightly integrated with these systems to understand what is being provisioned where so you can begin to understand service level impact.

Let me know if you have more questions about this topic.

    thanks-
