  • 1.  Moving BSS to the cloud – why would you?

Although moving business support systems into the cloud is not a strategic objective for any communications service provider, it can certainly help them achieve many of their goals for digital transformation.

A recent TM Forum survey revealed 74% of respondents have less than 10% of their BSS in a cloud.

While there are clear challenges in moving BSS to the cloud – cloud BSS can help operators achieve many of their objectives for digital transformation and as CSPs deliver more cloud-based products and services, enabling them with cloud-based support systems makes good business sense.

What are your thoughts on migrating BSS to the cloud?  What do you see as the primary roadblocks?

Good article from Mark Newman; the discussion is actually broader, the same concerns apply for many other non Telco applications, too. BSS makes it a bit more complex as there is much integration involved. I guess the biggest hurdle for operators considering the move is the cloud readiness of their BSS applications. Most applications have been there for a while and if the operator are lucky, they have been virtualized over the past years, but that does not make it cloud yet. Virtualized applications have their own benefits, but they do not need to be exported to a cloud and can stay perfectly well with an IT partner responsible for the day to day operations (managed services, IaaS, PaaS). However, if operators are looking for a real cloud to enjoy the benefits Mark lists in his article and are willing to move to a complete new BSS solution, the discussion is a complete different one.
