API Management and IoT can complement very well each other. First because APIs provides an increased level of interoperability through standards (OpenAPI, REST, etc). Second because using APIs you can "productize" access to your infrastructure, cloud-services and information, including those assets and data gathered from IoT World. Third because you can provide secure access to devices, using open standards, enabling you to establish new partnerships and expand ecosystems.
Using API management tools and methods you can gather and manage analytics data, collected from IoT devices, what enable Business and IT team have new insights about business and operations. You could feed this data into analytics & Machine Learning tools and discover new patterns. Do you want another great sample? In modern PaaS cloud environment (like for example Bluemix), you could expose APIs to Serverless functions, which could process business logic "on-demand", in order to react to specific conditions in the physical world. And it works without pre-allocating cloud infrastructure (like VMs, containers, etc). A sensor could detect an equipment malfunction and automatically trigger a Serverless APIs which could fire up a resolution process , with remediation actions (all of it managed and controlled by the platform). It is efficient in terms of interoperability and IT cost savings.
